Finding Joy in the Corners of Home

This is a corner of our family room.  From a distance, it looks like any ordinary room – bookshelves with knick knacks and photos, a lamp, and a place to sit.  But upon closer inspection, it becomes so much more.

This room is the heart of our home.  So many memories have been created here – so much life has been lived.

The frames on the shelves hold photos of our loved ones – some still with us, and some who have passed on – their presence is still alive here.

The sign that my daughter created many years ago reminds me, “Your never to old to do eny thing.” (Oh how I love phonetic spelling).

A shadow box hangs on the wall with the words “Season of Thanks, Season of Blessing, Season of Love.” I created it with a close friend, and it has become a beautiful reminder of the warmth, love, and joy we have shared through the seasons of our lives.

The black binders hold scrapbooks that tell the story of our lives - page by page, from when the kids were born, all the way to now.

The baskets on the bottom shelves hold blankets we grab whenever we want to be cozy. We even heat one up each morning for our adorable Yorkipoo, Bentley, so he can begin his day surrounded by warmth.

The sofas have held laughter from telling old stories, tears from hard conversations, and the warmth of meaningful talks with friends. They’ve been the place for movie nights, holiday gatherings, lazy Sunday naps, and the everyday moments of life.

And tucked into this space is a little gnome holding a “Happy Fall” sign. He’s more than just a whimsical decoration - he’s part of a collection from a dear friend who has passed away, a reminder that love lingers even when someone is gone.

November is such a beautiful month – quiet and reflective. It is the calm before the holiday hustle and bustle. This season brings so much change - falling leaves, cooler days, new routines. But home remains our constant: a familiar, safe, welcoming haven.

November is also the month when we turn our attention toward gratitude. And gratitude asks so little of us. There’s no need for new furniture or fresh paint in every room - only a shift in how we see what’s already here. When we choose to look at our homes with thankful eyes, every corner becomes more than enough.

This corner has been a witness to joy, grief, laughter, and love. It isn’t perfect, but it is mine - and I’m so grateful.

My challenge to you:
Find a corner in your home. Sit there for a few moments. Breathe and give thanks for the life lived in that space. You might be surprised at how full your heart feels.
