The Goal Isn't the Problem. The Path Might Be.

Yesterday, I was working on this reflection, planning to share it with you today. It was a reminder that sometimes we set a goal, head down one path, and then something gets in the way.

As it turns out, I had the opportunity to put that lesson into practice almost immediately.

I was all set to teach chair yoga on Zoom today. People had confirmed they were coming, I was looking forward to our time together, and everything was ready to go.

Then Mother Nature had other plans.

With downed power lines throughout town, our internet and power have been going in and out. Rather than cancel the class altogether, I simply rescheduled it for next week.

The goal didn't change. The path did.

This happens so often in our lives.

We set a goal. We make a plan. We head down the road with the best of intentions.

Then life happens.

A schedule changes. An unexpected expense comes up. A family member needs us. We don't sleep well. We lose momentum.

Before long, we start telling ourselves that maybe the goal just wasn't meant to be.

But what if it wasn't the goal that needed to change?

What if it was simply the path?

Imagine you're driving to a party and the road is closed. A detour sign points you in another direction.

You don't turn around and go home.

You simply take a different road.

Your destination hasn't changed.

Only your route has.

Our goals deserve that same flexibility.

Maybe your goal is to move your body every day. You imagined waking up early to walk, practice yoga, and journal before work. But after a few weeks, you realize you're sacrificing the sleep your body needs. Instead of giving up, you decide to walk in the morning and practice yoga later in the day.

The goal didn't change.

The path did.

What worked beautifully in another season of your life may not be what serves you today, and that's okay.

Sometimes the detour is longer.

Sometimes it's inconvenient.

And every once in a while, it takes you down a road you never would have chosen. One with beautiful scenery, unexpected lessons, or a pace that allows you to actually enjoy the journey.

Those gifts might never have been discovered if the original road had stayed open.

So if you've been feeling discouraged because your plan isn't working, don't assume the destination is out of reach.

Simply look for the detour.

Adjust the route.

Keep moving forward.

The destination may stay the same.

The path is allowed to change.
