Strong Roots

After the storm last week, branches and trees were scattered all over town. Some trees damaged roofs. Others brought down power lines. One enormous tree crushed three cars parked in a driveway.

As I walked through my neighborhood, one tree stopped me in my tracks.

It was massive. From the outside, it looked healthy, strong, and established. Yet it had fallen, taking another tree with it and knocking out the power for the surrounding homes.

As I looked more closely, I noticed something surprising.

Its root system was incredibly shallow.

I began thinking about how our lives are like that tree. From the outside, we can look strong, healthy, and like we have it all together. But when the storms of life come, it's not our appearance that determines whether we remain standing - it's the strength of the roots beneath the surface.

We spend so much time building our careers, caring for others, maintaining our homes, and meeting others’expectations, that it's easy to forget the quiet work of strengthening our roots.

Our roots are what ground us.

They are moments of stillness.

Our values.

Our faith.

Our connection to nature.

The people who support us.

The habits that nourish our bodies and calm our minds.

These are the things no one else may ever see, yet they determine how we weather life's storms.

Because storms are inevitable.

There will be seasons of loss, uncertainty, disappointment, change, illness, and heartbreak.

The question isn't whether the storm will come.

The question is what will hold us steady when it does.

From a distance, two trees may appear equally beautiful. But when the winds begin to blow, the strength beneath the surface is revealed.

The same is true for us.

Inner peace isn't built when life is easy. It's cultivated in the small, daily choices we make long before the storm arrives.

Each time you pause to breathe instead of react...

Each time you choose presence over busyness...

Each time you care for your body, quiet your mind, or reconnect with what matters most...

You are growing deeper roots.

Society celebrates what is visible.

Nature reminds us that what is hidden is often what matters most.

Today, instead of asking yourself how you appear to others, ask yourself:

What am I doing to strengthen my roots?

Because when the next storm comes - and someday it will - may you not just survive it.

May you remain deeply rooted, grounded in who you are, and able to bend without breaking.

Today's Invitation:

Spend a few quiet moments reflecting on the foundations of your life.

What helps you feel grounded?

What practices nourish your spirit?

What has become shallow that needs your attention?

Choose one small way to strengthen your roots this week. The strongest lives are built quietly, one intentional choice at a time.
