The Sounds I Almost Missed

I often talk about my morning walks and the wisdom I gain from them. It's one of my favorite parts of the day. I head out almost every morning, and most days I'm listening to a podcast, an audiobook, or music while I walk.

This morning was different.

I couldn't find my AirPods.

At first, I was annoyed. I actually thought about going back inside to keep looking for them, but instead I decided to just start walking.

A few minutes into my walk, I realized maybe I wasn't supposed to find them.

The birds were impossible to ignore. Some had songs I could have listened to all morning. Others were squawking so loudly they almost hurt my ears. But what struck me wasn't how different they sounded, it was that they all kept contributing to the conversation. None of them seemed worried that their voice wasn't as beautiful as the next bird's. They simply had something to say.

Then I noticed the rain.

It wasn't pouring. It was just a light rain making its way through the trees before it reached the ground. Instead of wishing I had stayed home, I found myself thinking about the commitment I'd made to myself that I would take my morning walk no matter what. It's easy to keep promises to ourselves when the weather is perfect. It's the rainy mornings that really test whether we meant what we said.

A few minutes later, I realized there was a cool breeze. Had I been listening to something, I honestly don't think I would have noticed how much the temperature had dropped since yesterday. It made me wonder how many little things I miss because my attention is somewhere else.

In the distance, I could hear generators running after last night's storm. Normally, I probably would have thought they were just an annoying noise. Instead, they reminded me how fortunate we were that our power was only out for a short time. What sounded like noise became a reminder to be grateful.

By the time I got home, I realized I hadn't missed my AirPods at all.

Don't get me wrong. I love podcasts, audiobooks, and music. They teach me, inspire me, entertain me, and make the miles go by faster.

But this morning reminded me that sometimes the lesson isn't coming through my headphones.

Sometimes it's already there, waiting for me to pay attention.

Maybe that's true for all of us.

Sometimes the answers we're looking for aren't in the next podcast or the next book. Sometimes they're in the birds, the rain, the breeze, and the everyday moments we would have missed if we weren't paying attention.
